Somewhere Beyond The Sea - Robbie Williams

Monday, October 26, 2009 , Posted by SongBird at 12:22 AM

As with all of Trenet's songs this one was originally published by Raoul Breton in France with the title "La Mer" (The Sea). Jack Lawrence did the translation into English lyric but in his own creative way decided to word it differently -giving the meaning behind the song, a love story of a sea-faring lover and a land-locked lover waiting on a golden shore for his return. The original French lyric tells about the different moods of the sea and how they affected the person.

It has been recorded by many artists, including Benny Goodman, Mantovani, Roger Williams and Gisele MacKenzie, but Bobby Darin's version released in 1959 is the best known by many, reaching #6 on the Billboard Hot 100.

In the movie tribute to Bobby Darin, Beyond The Sea, Kevin Spacey sang the tittle song. The hit movie also starred Kate Bosworth, John Goodman, & Bob Hoskins.

Soundtrack for Finding Nemo, one of my favourite animated films from 2003 use the Robbie Williams cover version of Beyond The Sea, taken from the album "Swing, when you are winning" The film won the Academy Award for the best animated feature and it*s the most selling DVD ever.

Lyrics

Somewhere beyond the sea
Somewhere waitin' for me
My lover stands on golden sand
And watches the ships that go sailin'

Somewhere beyond the sea
She's there watchin' for me
If I could fly like birds on high
Then straight to her arms I'd go sailin'

It's far beyond the star
It's near beyond the moon
I know beyond a doubt
My heart will lead me there soon

We'll meet beyond the shore
We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be, beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailin'

I know beyond a doubt,
My heart will lead me there soon
We'll meet, I know we'll meet
Beyond the shore
We'll kiss just as before
Happy we'll be, beyond the sea
And never again I'll go sailin'
